As we all begin this new year I am sure we have all talked about the things we want to do different or things we want to change.  Most churches are in a time of fasting and prayer for this new year.  I would like to encourage you to read I Chronicles 4 with the emphasis on 4:10.

The prayer of Jabez is a powerful prayer and it has far reaching meaning.  The Bible says Jabez was an honorable man.  Head and shoulders above even his brothers. He knew his God and he was bold enough to prayer this prayer and expect an answer.

"That you would bless me."  Jabez knew the God he believed in is the source of all blessings.  There are all kinds of blessings.  The actual meaning of the word blessing, as it pertains to the Bible is, supernatural favor. I certainly want this in my life.

"And enlarge my territory".  Territory here does not mean physical land. Jabez was more concerned about making an impact for the Kingdom of God. I think this also means enlarge my life, my influence, my opportunities to share the Gospel. The opening of new doors and enlarge the territory of my heart.

"Let your hand be with me."  Look, you and I can only do so much in this flesh,  We need God's help. God's hand is not short and when His hand is on you, to lead and guide you, miracles happen.

"Keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain."  I know that Jabez's name means, sorrow maker.  I feel like he is renouncing  this awful meaning and he wanted to be free from the pain of it.  Maybe Jabez was praying for God to strengthen him and give him wisdom to make the right decisions.

I pray you read this prayer for yourself.  Let God speak to you through this prayer for your life. The great thing to know is that God granted what Jabez asked and He will do the same for you.
